The Las Vegas Urban League Entrepreneurship Center, along with the National League of Cities, recently hosted its first Childcare Entrepreneurship Business Model Competition on July 11, 2023, where childcare entrepreneurs were asked to create a one-page business plan in the hope of winning a $5,000 grant to help grow and scale their business.

The three winners were: Angelle Lewis, True Dreams Child Care; Rhayvin Glenn, Nanny Rhay’s Nursery and Preschool; and Darla Anderson, Growing Enlightened Minds Child Care.

Out of 40 new and existing childcare business-owner applicants, who submitted an online application describing the key aspects of their business plan, five finalists were given five minutes to present their business models live in front of a panel of judges to describe their business concept, premise, and value proposition in the hope of winning one of three $5,000 grants to support their business.

“We built the competition around an educational experience,” Executive Director Dino Browne of the LVUL Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship, said. “One thing we teach our entrepreneurs is how to write a business plan, something that’s very critical if they want to be successful in their respective businesses. We are currently making a special push here in Nevada because we live in a childcare desert. There are nowhere near the number of quality childcare providers, as there are children of parents who are working that need childcare and education opportunities.”

“Our competition is specifically targeted to address these problems,” Browne added. “We want to encourage more and more individuals to get into this market to help our children here in Nevada.”
